Dear (Your Senator’s Name Here),

I am writing to urge you to support The Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act (S.309).

As this legislation states: “global warming poses a significant threat to the national security and economy of the United States, public health and welfare, and the global environment.” Already, global warming is causing significant adverse and costly impacts throughout the United States and the world. Ice caps, permafrost and glaciers are melting; there are increased fires and insect outbreaks; we are experiencing greater storms; the ocean is becoming more acidic; many species of animals and plants are in decline; there has been a loss of lakes and wetlands; and we have experienced enhanced disease and deaths. (Add your personal observations and/or additional concerns here.)

Since Americans are contributing more than 23% of the world’s greenhouse gases, and since a vast majority of scientists agree that human activities are the primary cause of the our planet’s warming in the last 50 years, it is imperative that we take meaningful steps to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible.

I support The Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act because it establishes meaningful targets and strategies for reducing emissions, and promotes American technology and ingenuity. With this bill, the US will become a world leader in solving global warming Right now we are falling behind in renewable energy technology and vehicle fuel economy technology to other countries who have already begun to address this pressing problem. The bill provides very reasonable methods for emission reductions, for example improving vehicle fuel economy and requiring utilities to increase the amount of energy they provide that comes from renewable sources.

We need action from Congress now. The substantial, measurable impacts from global warming are well documented and are increasing. (Optional: In Alaska alone, because the Yukon River has increased 10 degress Farenheit in the last 25 years, 45% of salmon in the Yukon River are now infected with the destructive parasite Icthyphonus. There has been the world’s largest outbreak of spruce bark beetle, devastating over 4 million acres of white spruce. Polar bears are turning to cannibalism. Communities, such as Shishmaref, are falling into the ocean.) (Include personal evidence of global warming affecting your life if you would like.)

Please support S. 309. For the sake of current and future generations of Americans, we must act responsibly and quickly.

Sincerely,

(Insert your name, title, and contact information here)
