The Native Village of Port Lions, a stellar green council, recycles numerous items that would otherwise be unnecessarily disposed of in the landfill, including lead acid and dry cell batteries and fluorescent tubular bulbs. The have developed a scrap metal recycling program for not only aluminum cans but also 55 gallon drums and junk vehicles. Plus they have a staging area where car battery fluids are drained and removed, which makes it that much easier to properly recycle junk vehicles. Way to go!! For more information visit the Native Village of Port Lions website or call 907.454.2234. More InformationRegularly check Kodiak’s local community calendar for any upcoming green events. Kodiak College is moving full steam ahead on conservation stewardship initiatives including: replacing 100% of KOC's standard electric light fixtures and bulbs to energy saving varieties; creating a raised bed garden in our parking lot, growing vegetables to donate to shelters which feed those in need; using recycled paper and less ink-intensive design for printing brochures, posters and other ad materials, recycling plastics, cardboard and paper; and using indigenous plantings in landscaping which requires less water, soil treatment and fertilization for growth. |
