Recycling

Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) has numerous tips and programs that help Alaskans recycle. One of their most popular programs is the Flying Cans Program, which flies cans out of rural communities to Anchorage to be recycled. 

Most NAPA Auto Parts stores accept car and boat batteries. Visit the NAPA Auto Parts website to locate a store near you.

Solid Waste

Solid Waste Alaska Network provides great information on a variety of solid waste issues such as Removing Junk Vehicles and banning plastic bags

Backhauling Services

Yukon River Intertribal Watershed Council (YRITWC) offers a wonderful backhauling program for communities along the Yukon River. 

Crowley Shipping Services ships backhauls materials in areas they service. YWITC to the lower-48. 

Northland Marine Transportation will also assist rural communities they service in backhauling materials to lower-48 recycling plants.

Energy Efficiency  

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative not only provides electricity to the community of St. Mary’s but also energy saving tips that protect the environment and saves their customers money. To learn more, visit AVEC's website .   

Renewable Energy

Golden Valley Electric Association's (GVEA) Sustainable Natural Alternative Power orSNAP program links local people who want to produce renewable energy,such as solar and wind power, with local members who want to buyrenewable power. Rising fuel costs in rural Alaska hasdriven Kotzebue Electric Association (KEA) to become a pioneer in the use of wind energy in an arcticenvironment. KEA's wind energy program, consisting of 17 wind turbines, provides analternative source of energy with the potential to keep electric costsat affordable levels. Outstanding!! Resolutions are a very effectiveway to demonstrate consensus amongst a community or organization on a particularissue such as promoting renewable energy in your community. Great examples of renewable energy resolutions are available on the Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference (SWAMC) website. For example, SWAMC passed a resolutionfor a demonstration biomass boiler in Dillingham, which will burn waste generated by the seafood industry including cardboard, pallets, andfish byproducts.
